11 a-side Winter League Match 1 Report

Dublin Devils FC 3-1 Real Mayo

Scorers- Gildea 8, Stevens 16, 43

Devils Team – Mark Carroll (Sean O'Sullivan 56), Niall Scanlon (c), Derek Naughton (James Lee 38), Mike McQuillan, Gordon Ormsby (Conrad Cadogan 37), Conrad Cadogan (Pete Dockrell 25), Brendan Gildea (Brian Donegan 50), Arnaldo Gibelli (Keith Boyd 54), Chris Grehan, Neil Hayes (Ivan Stevens 35), Ivan Stevens (Paul Gogarty 23).

An early 7.15pm kick-off at Wesley College, Dundrum to start the new season in brightness for the Dublin Devils against Real Mayo.

Real Mayo had the first shot of the game in the second minute, firing over the bar. The Devils played a very good passing game, keeping control of the ball and frustrating their opponents, denying them too many more chances in the early part of the game.

In the eighth minute, Brendan Gildea sent a superb shot into the box, which curved its way into the back of the net and opened his and the Devil’s account and deservedly put them 1-0 ahead in the game.

A fine save by Mark Carroll on 14, denied Real Mayo an equaliser and then in the 16th minute Ivan Stevens charged up and put the ball into the back of the net and the Devils were 2-0 up. Some personnel changes then took place and later, on 26 minutes, Arnaldo Gibelli had an opportunity which went narrowly wide.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 2-0 Real Mayo.

The second half started with a bang as in the first minute Paul Gogarty skied the ball over the bar and Gibelli followed it up with another shot just beyond the post. Real Mayo earned a free kick in the Devils half and in the 5th minute scored to narrow their deficit to just one goal. Dublin Devils 2-1 Real Mayo.

Minutes after entering the contest, James Lee arched the ball over the crossbar, but in the next minute, Gibelli found Stevens with a beautiful pass which he converted into his second and the Devils third goal of the match. Dublin Devils 3-1 Real Mayo.

Real Mayo continued on the attack and the midfield and defence resolutely cut off their every forward movement with steel and determination. Paul Gogarty once again put a chance wide in the 14th minute and Mark Carroll made a stunning goal line save in the 24th minute to deny Real Mayo a certain goal and made another fine stop in the dying seconds of the game to deny them a second goal.

At the end of a very entertaining game, it finished Dublin Devils FC 3-1 Real Mayo, with 3 points in the bag and the first win of the season earned.

11 a-side Winter League Match 2 Report

Dublin Devils FC 1-3 Bar Flies

Scorers - Gogarty 33

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), James Lee (Derek Naughton 34), Conrad Cadogan (Brian Donegan 42), Pete Dockrell (Neil Hayes 45), Mike McQuillan, Brendan Gildea , Arnaldo Gibelli, Chris Grehan, Ivan Stevens, Paul Gogarty. Unused subs - Sean O'Sullivan, Keith Boyd.

An 8.15pm kick-off this week in our second game of the season. Very windy conditions prevail in Dundrum as the Devils face Bar Flies, who were playing their first game of the season.

A good opening for the Devils in the early part, with the wind slightly in their favour, saw extended periods of pressure in the first few minutes, with the best of the early going an Ivan Stevens shot wide of the post on 4 mins. Following an altercation 2 minutes later, Stevens stepped up to take a penalty in very difficult conditions, where a teammate had to hold the ball on the spot, and the spot kick was saved by the Bar Flies keeper.

At the other end, a free kick on 12 minutes saw Bar Flies put the ball into the net and take the lead. Showing the determination that exists within the team, the Devils fought back and Paul Gogarty shot wide on 18, Arnaldo Gibelli on 19, Brendan Gildea had a certain goal saved on 20, Mike McQuillan’s superb corner just went wide and Ivan Stevens again went close on 21 mins. The Devils were retaining possession but the conditions hampered their scoring opportunities. In the Devils goal, Mark Carroll made a great save; sending the ball wide and Chris Grehan made a fine clearance of the resulting corner.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Bar Flies.

The second half got underway with no personnel changes and in the third minute another penalty kick was awarded. Paul Gogarty stepped up this time to hammer the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season and to level the score at one apiece. Against the wind Carroll made a save a minute later and despite some good play over the next few minutes, they yielded no further goals for the Devils.

On 12 minutes, a long speculative shot on goal from Bar Flies was carried by the wind over the head and outstretched arms of Carroll and into the net, making it 2-1 to Bar Flies. Carroll recovered with a fine save 2 minutes later and the Devils saw off an extended period of danger from Bar Flies with the wind now in their favour. The Devils had a screamer of a free kick go just wide on 21 mins and Bar Flies confirmed all 3 points on 25 mins with their third goal of the evening.

At full time, Dublin Devils FC 1-3 Bar Flies. A game of chances and opportunities, both missed and taken between the two teams, but the Devils were very disappointed to just fall short tonight.

11 a-side Winter League Match 3 Report

Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Cherrypickers

Scorers - Stevens 6

Devils Team – Sean O'Sullivan, Niall Scanlon (c) (Conrad Cadogan 49), Derek Naughton (Pete Dockrell 42), Mike McQuillan, Gordon Ormsby (James Lee 46), Chris Grehan, Brendan Gildea, Arnaldo Gibelli, Keith Boyd (Brian Donegan 35), Neil Hayes, Ivan Stevens.

An 8.15pm kick-off against a Cherrypickers team who had recorded a draw and loss in their first two games of the season. Blustery conditions again, with the wind blowing sideways across the pitch, favouring neither team particularly.

The Devils, as has become their norm, opened up the game quickly, with nice passing and ball retention. An early opening shot hit the side netting and on 6 mins Neil Hayes put a superb pass through to Ivan Stevens who scored his third goal of the season, to send the Devils into the lead.

On 13 mins it was unlucky for the Devils and the failure to clear a ball from the goal area and the resulting pinball effect outside the box saw the ball fly past the outstretched hands of Devils keeper Sean O'Sullivan and into the back of the net to level things up.

The Devils went back on the attack – nobody was on hand to net a super Stevens pass on 17, while Chris Grehan's shot was saved on 24 mins and another as the half time whistle blew came to nothing.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Cherrypickers.

Cherrypickers went on the attack as the second half got under way, Grehan made a clearance on 33, O'Sullivan saved a minute later and at the other end, Keith Boyd shot wide on 35 mins.

Stevens and Arnaldo Gibelli had a number of shots each in the next few minutes, rattling the crossbar, going wide of the post or being saved by Cherrypickers keeper. O'Sullivan had one notable save on 45 mins that would have put Cherrypickers ahead.

Despite plenty of pressure from the Devils, the second goal to win the game was to remain elusive tonight, but the performance and point earned was a good recovery from last week’s disappointment.

Full time in Dundrum, Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Cherrypickers and the Devils remain in fifth place in the table overall after 3 weeks.

11 a-side Winter League Match 4 Report

Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Jossy’s Giants

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Neil Hayes (James Lee 48), Chris Grehan (Francis Fitzgibbon 47), Mike McQuillan, Pete Dockrell, Brendan Gildea, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brian Donegan (Conrad Cadogan 40), Paul Gogarty , Ivan Stevens.

Much improved conditions in Dundrum this week, calm and dry for another 8.15pm kick-off against second in the table Jossy’s Giants.

The Devils again went on the attack in the early minutes but couldn’t break through their defence and then followed up by soaking up the counterattack pressure. Brendan Gildea sent in a great corner in the 9th minute but there was nobody able to knock the ball into the net.

The following minutes saw the Devils defend resolutely from long goal kicks and long throw ins into the box, Brian Donegan cleared on 10 mins, Mike McQuillan on 12 and Niall Scanlon stood firm in position knocking away credible scoring chances on 14 and 17 mins.

Neil Hayes shot over on 19 mins and some great passes shared between Chris Grehan and Paul Gogarty still could not breach the Giants goal. On 22 mins Chris Grehan put a free kick from the half way line marginally over the bar, Niall Scanlon again stood firm in defence, and Jossy’s Giants’ best shot went over the bar on 26. Brendan Gildea put a wicked shot just wide of the post and that was to be how it remained at the break.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 0-0 Jossy’s Giants.

The second half got underway with no changes; the Giants sent a ball across the goal but couldn’t get anyone to it straight from the kick-off. At the other end, Ivan Stevens sent a super cross into the box which Paul Gogarty, Brendan Gildea and Arnaldo Gibelli all tried and failed to get into the back of the net, with some superb saves from their keeper.

The next few minutes say the Devils stand firm in defence and a number of key saves from Mark Carroll and clearances from Mike McQuillan, Niall Scanlon and Chris Grehan held off Jossy’s Giants from scoring. Brendan Gildea had another on target shot stopped on 42 mins and Mark Carroll handled another long throw into the box.

On 48 minutes, the superb defending to that point finally found a weakness and Jossy’s Giants were able to sneak the ball into the net, out of the reach of the goalkeepers’ outstretched arm. Dublin Devils Fc 0-1 Jossy’s Giants.

The last few minutes of the game saw the Devils launch an avalanche of attacks, but each was thwarted by long ball clearances to eliminate the danger. A very well-played game for the Devils ended in an underserved and narrow defeat by a team who exploited their one opportunity. A Devils performance like that every week will see them win more than lose in the coming weeks.

11 a-side Winter League Match 5 Report

Dublin Devils FC 1-4 Football Club FC

Scorers - Gildea 1

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Neil Hayes, Chris Grehan (Conrad Cadogan 30), Francis Fitzgibbon (Derek Naughton 30), Mike McQuillan, Pete Dockrell, Brendan Gildea, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brian Donegan, Ivan Stevens.

The threat of rain hung in the air this week in Dundrum for an 8.15pm middle of the table clash with Football Club FC.

The Devils as has become their trademark immediately went on the attack from the kick-off. A corner taken by Brendan Gildea saw the FC goalkeeper fumble a catch and the ball went over the line inside the first minute. In the 3rd minute, the keeper again fumbled a catch but this time Ivan Stevens was unable to capitalise.

Devils keeper Mark Carroll made a good stop on 8 minutes, but then on 11 minutes Football Club were gifted an equaliser with some very sloppy defending. Things got worse 3 minutes later when another lapse saw FC go 2-1 ahead, in spite of a valiant attempted goal line clearance by Niall Scanlon. Brendan Gildea had an on-target shot saved on 20 minutes and from there until half time, Football Club FC controlled much of the game.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 1-2 Football Club FC.

The second half saw 2 personnel changes for the Devils and the rain fall heavily for the rest of the game. The opening few minutes saw Brian Donegan shoot wide on 32 and 37, Brendan Gildea on 36, Niall Scanlon clear a certain FC goal on 33 and another opportunity for a Devil’s goal not being converted on 39 minutes.

On 41 minutes a Football Club free kick was poorly marked and they increased their advantage to 3-1, then 3 minutes later an FC corner saw a 4th goal as the Devils bad night was complete.

It took some solid goalkeeping and defending to maintain the score line, and the Devils were unable to claw back any goals to reduce the deficit in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Full time confirmed a bad night for the Dublin Devils, who despite their early goal were sadly unable to capitalise on the advantage and maintain their lead. Football Club FC cruelly took advantage of the Devils lacklustre performance to inflict their worst result of the season.

Full time Dublin Devils FC 1 – 4 Football Club FC.

11 a-side Winter League Match 6 Report

Dublin Devils FC 1-0 F.C.D.

Scorers - Gibelli 46

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Neil Hayes, Derek Naughton (James Lee 34), Mike McQuillan, Pete Dockrell, Brendan Gildea, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brian Donegan (Francis Fitzgibbon 42), Ivan Stevens, Paul Gogarty (Gordon Ormsby 50).

A first early 7.15pm start since the opening round of matches on a bright, dry night in Dundrum. A change in tactics tonight, with the 5 at the back formation being replaced by a more traditional 4-4-2 lineout as the Devils faced FCD who sat 1 point above them in the table.

Uncharacteristically, the Devils made a slow start and Devils goalkeeper Mark Carroll made a fine push over the bar save on 2 mins, and followed up by stopping a header going into the net from the resulting corner. On 9 mins, Captain Niall Scanlon made a super clearance off the goal line, stopping a certain goal for FCD.

The first half saw FCD hold more control of the game and offer plenty of attacking chances, which the Devils defence stood up to. On the other side, the Devils had rare chances to breach the FCS defence, despite good efforts on 19 and 23 mins.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 0-0 FCD.

The second half saw another FCD shot on goal confidently caught by Mark Carroll on 36 mins. The play continued back and forth for the next 10 mins or so, when the Devils were awarded a free kick on the 18 yard line.

Brendan Gildea stepped up to direct the ball into the path of Arnaldo Gibelli who shot home on 46 mins to give the Dublin Devils the lead. Dublin Devils FC 1-0 FCD.

A minute later, Ivan Stevens had a point blank shot saved by the FCD keeper.

Full time Dublin Devils FC 1-0 FCD.

A return to winning ways and a satisfying victory, topped off by a first clean sheet of the season for Mark Carroll and a very impressive performance from the Devils defence, with a strong shift from Mike McQuillan.

11 a-side Winter League Match 7 Report

Dublin Devils FC 3-1 Watson Wanderers

Scorers - Grehan 13, Gibelli 35, Stevens 41

Devils Team – Mark Carroll (Sean O'Sullivan 47), Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Pete Dockrell, Conrad Cadogan, Brendan Gildea, Chris Grehan (Derek Naughton 49), Arnaldo Gibelli, Brian Donegan (Francis Fitzgibbon 45), Neil Hayes (Paul Gogarty 39), Ivan Stevens (Keith Boyd 51).

Back to a late 9.15pm kick-off against Watson Wanderers, who again sit once place above the Devils in the table. Following last week’s success, the 4-4-2 formation was retained.

The Devils did some good defending for the first 5 mins, holding the position on the field. On 6 mins, Ivan Stevens sent a perfect pass to Chris Grehan who put the ball millimetres over the bar.

It was a back and forth game, Arnaldo Gibelli shot over on 9 mins, and then Mark Carroll had to save a Watson Wanderers shot on 12 mins. Back up the other end, Chris Grehan shot and hit the net this time for his first goal of the campaign and the Dublin Devils were 1-0 ahead.

Watson Wanderers had a header go wide on 17 mins as the Devils soaked up the pressure with the same determined defence from last week. On 20 mins Arnaldo Gibelli was very badly fouled, with no reaction or follow-up by the referee. On 24 mins Wanderers again had a shot saved and Mike McQuillan was superb in his cancelling out of their attacks.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 1-0 Watson Wanderers.

The second half saw a yellow card for Watson Wanderers in the first minute for another very cynical tackle, giving a man advantage during the 5 min sin bin for the offence. On 4 mins another in a long line of fantastic Brendan Gildea corners was cleared in a scramble on the Watson Wanderers goal line. A minute later Arnaldo Gibelli picked up a pass in midfield and shot from the half way line and the ball sailed into the net to out the Devils 2-0 up.

On 41 mins, Ivan Stevens connected with another great Brendan Gildea corner and the Devils were 3-0 up and cruising, back to their form of the early part of the season. A Gildea shot was saved on 44 mins, while the Devils were able to handle the counter attacks from Watson Wanderers.

A string of substitutions took place, including Devils Keeper Mark Carroll, recording his second clean sheet in a row. His replacement Sean O'Sullivan made a point blank save on 57 mins and Watson Wanderers were able to gain a consolation goal on 59 mins as the final whistle blew.

Full time Dublin Devils FC 3-1 Watson Wanderers.

A very solid performance from defence, midfield and attack and the Devils are climbing back up the table.

11 a-side Winter League Match 8 Report

Dublin Devils FC 2-2 Haven’t a Kalou

Scorers - Stevens 3, McQuillan 54

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Pete Dockrell, Conrad Cadogan (Derek Naughton 38), Brendan Gildea, Chris Grehan, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brian Donegan (Paul Gogarty 46), Neil Hayes, Ivan Stevens.

An 8.15pm kick-off in good conditions this week against Haven’t a Kalou who sit 1 point and 2 positions above the Devils in the league table, and who possess the league’s top scorer on 8 goals.

The Devils went on the attack at the outset, with Ivan Stevens shooting wide in the first minute, which having to be wary of the Haven’t a Kalou counter attack. On 3 mins Brendan Gildea sent a shot into Arnaldo Gibelli who placed it for Ivan Stevens who shot home to cement his position as Devils Top Scorer. Devils 1-0 up. Haven’t a Kalou reacted strongly, a free kick from the halfway line had to be shouldered off the line by Brendan Gildea and Devils Keeper made an outstanding save of the on target header from the resulting corner.

On 7 mins, a Conrad Cadogan corner was bundled into the goal but disallowed due to a high foot raised in the box. The Devils were handling the on-going attack from Haven’t a Kalou, while shots from Brian Donegan, a header from Neil Hayes and an Arnaldo Gibelli shot wide just couldn’t hit the back of the net.

A corner for Haven’t a Kalou on 14 mins was poorly attacked by the Devils players allowing an open header to level the score at 1-1. Buoyed, Haven’t a Kalou continued the assault with the Devils dangerous on the counter attack. A Haven’t a Kalou shot again from the half way line on 23 mins was cleared by Conrad Cadogan and Chris Grehan. The Devils had a great chance on 25 mins that was saved and on 26 Stevens put Gibelli in for a certain goal but the shot was scuffed wide. On 28 mins, Mark Carroll had to perform a full stretch dive to stop a certain goal hitting the net and made another fine save on the resulting corner.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Haven’t a Kalou.

Haven’t a Kalou came out strongly for the second half, with immediate pressure that kept Carroll on his toes. On 33, it was one shot too many for him as a shot beyond his reach hit the net and Haven’t a Kalou went 2-1 up.

On 36 mins Mike McQuillan made a fine clearance and had to make another a minute later as Haven’t a Kalou were in full flow. On 39 mins Haven’t a Kalou shot wide again and on 43 Arnaldo Gibelli shot wide as the Devils made their comeback. On 46 mins, a now trademark Brendan Gildea corner found Paul Gogarty beautifully but the Haven’t a Kalou keeper made the save.

On 49 mins Gibelli couldn’t convert a free kick and the next 5 mins were end to end play, with both teams trying to either equalise or put the game beyond reach.

On 54 mins, the normally solid defensive role of Mike McQuillan turned to attack as he shot towards goal from 45 yards out and the ball hit the back of the net. Devils 2-2 Haven’t a Kalou.

Forced to react, Haven’t a Kalou shot back on 55 mins forcing Mark Carroll to save a free kick to maintain the scoreline. The resulting corner was again tipped over the bar by Carroll as the referee blew for game over.

Full time Dublin Devils FC 2-2 Haven’t a Kalou.

An outstanding display of refusing to give in when behind, as has become the Devils mantra. Solid defending as usual from the ever committed back four of Scanlon, McQuillan and Cadogan (Naughton)and Pete Dockrell who put body on the line to maintain the defensive strength. Some excellent set pieces which are becoming a powerful weapon in the Devils attack. And finally, some absolutely world class saves from the man between the posts Mark Carroll, who kept the scoreline intact for the Devils to earn a very well deserved point in the game.

Next week, the final game of the first half of the season, against table toppers John FC at 7.15pm.

11 a-side Winter League Match 9 Report

Dublin Devils FC 0-0 John FC

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Chris Grehan, Pete Dockrell, Ivan Stevens, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brendan Gildea, Francis Fitzgibbon (James Lee 48), Brian Donegan, , Paul Gogarty.

A first of 2 consecutive 7.15pm kick-offs and the last game in the first half of the season against the team sitting top of the table after 8 games, John FC. Conditions were very wet and windy this week.

The Devils started well in the first few minutes, playing 4-5-1. On 5 mins Ivan Stevens ran the length of the pitch with the ball, passed wide to Brendan Gildea but the shot was saved by the John FC keeper. The Devils continued their pressure over the next few minutes and on 12 mins a certain goal was saved point blank when Ivan Stevens shot but the keeper made another fine save.

After the first 15 mins, the Devils had the better of the chances, the Devils defence solid as ever and John FC not having any shots on goal to speak of. On 17 mins the game had to be halted when uniquely Devils goalkeeper Mark Carroll’s goal blew away – it was very windy!!!!

On 19 mins Ivan Stevens had another shot cleared off the goal line and a minute later John FC forced a very solid save by Mark Carroll. That spurred John FC on, and the Devils defence had to contain their attacks for the remainder of the half.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 0-0 John FC.

No changes at half time, and John FC maintained their attacking momentum. Mike McQuillan cleared off the goal line on 32 mins and they also shot over the bar on the rebound. On 34 Arnaldo Gibelli sent a pass into the box but Paul Gogarty was unable to connect with it to send it into the net.

On 37 Captain Niall Scanlon made a superb clearance to maintain the 0-0 score line and from there John FC were limited to shots on goal from well outside the box, with another clearance from Mike McQuillan on 44 mins and a world class save from Mark Carroll on 46 mins to keep the Devils in the game.

With 50 mins on the clock, the Devils again went on the attack and couldn’t capitalise on a John FC goalkeeping fumble to score. In what turned out to be the last kick of the game, Mark Carroll in the Devils goal made an unbelievable save to hold onto a point (and achieve a second clean sheet) in the game and deny John FC a definite winning goal. At the end the Devils were disappointed not to score and take all 3 points, but a 0-0 against the league leaders was a strong performance. Full time result, Dublin Devils FC 0-0 John FC.

And so at the half way point in the season, the Devils have a record of P9 W3 D3 L3 F12 A13 PTS12 and currently in 6th place in the League Table, 5 points behind the leaders and a solid position to face into the second half of the season.

11 a-side Winter League Match 10 Report

Dublin Devils FC 2-1 Real Mayo

Scorers -Stevens 2, 15

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Chris Grehan, Pete Dockrell, Ivan Stevens, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brendan Gildea (Derek Naughton 56), Neil Hayes, Brian Donegan, Paul Gogarty.

Back to the start as the league enters its second half and all opponents line up again to face the Devils. A 7.15pm kick-off, with gales and torrential rain hampering playing conditions and also hampering the reporting abilities, but not the Devils supporters who as ever were out in force to cheer on the team.

Real Mayo were the opponents once again, with the Devils confident having beaten them 3-1 in the opening fixture of the league.

Real Mayo kicked off and within seconds the ball was in the back of the Devils net before they even had a chance to see the ball move around the pitch. Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Real Mayo.

Undaunted, in the second minute a Brendan Gildea corner found Ivan Stevens in the box, but the ball bounced off the crossbar and out. Immediately after the kick out, Ivan Stevens grabbed control of the ball and shot to level the score at 1-1.

The next 10 minutes or so was end to end play in treacherous conditions, with good pressure by the Devils on the Real Mayo goal.

On 15 minutes a superb pinpoint accurate pass from Neil Hayes again found Ivan Stevens running towards goal and he shot and scored his and the Devils second. The Devils had the better of the possession for the remainder of the half, displaying some very neat passing and forcing Real Mayo into long range shots only.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 2-1 Real Mayo.

The second half was played out without major incident. The Devils defence was solid and Mark Carroll was equal to any shots sent towards him in goal. There were some further good chances from the Devils attack, but no further goals, as a tactic of retaining possession and hindering Real Mayo shots was adopted.

Full time result, Dublin Devils FC 2-1 Real Mayo and a second victory over the team to leapfrog them in the table and climb to 5th place and now only 3 points behind the leaders.

A 9.15pm date with Bar Flies awaits next Thursday, a team who won 3-1 in the previous fixture, but who now sit in 9th place in the table, having only secure one more victory since that game with the Devils out to avenge that loss.

Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Bar Flies

Scorers -Grehan 53

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Chris Grehan, Pete Dockrell, Ivan Stevens, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brendan Gildea (Conrad Cadogan 45), Neil Hayes, Brian Donegan (James Lee 37), Paul Gogarty (Francis Fitzgibbon 52).

A 9.15pm kick-off in dry but cold conditions in Dundrum, and along with the core supporters who cheer on every week, we had 2 special guest supporters for this game. Lined up as opponents tonight were Bar Flies, our 3-1 conquerors in Matchday 2 back in September, with the Devils in 5th place in the table, 3 points off top spot.

Bar Flies had the better of the first 5 mins, and the next 5 were more even, but the Devils still had no clear chances on goal. Bar Flies were defending very resolutely and the Devils weren’t able to get the ball into the final third of the pitch.

When the Devils finally made their way to the Bar Flies box, the clearance was speculatively pushed forward into the Devils box and into the net. Bar Flies 1-0 up.

Multiple long throws from the Devils to attempt to breach the defence were all cleared wide as Bar Flies stood strong and cleared any danger balls far too easily.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Bar Flies.

Straight into the second half, Devils Keeper Mark Carroll was forced into a save from a corner to deny a second goal. Ivan Stevens took the ball and ran towards goal but didn’t get a shot in – another attempt 3 mins later went wide of the post as the Devils tried to come back into the game. Arnaldo Gibelli sends a great shot into Chris Grehan but the keeper saves on 36 mins.

Bar Flies were still pressing and dangerous on the break. On 41 mins Ivan Stevens again had a shot which ricocheted off the post and Chris Grehan’s follow up was saved again. A corner from Brendan Gildea on 42 mins was just unable to be push over the line by anyone in the box.

On 47 mins Neil Hayes put a corner into the box, Ivan Stevens shot and the ball appeared to go over the line, but no goal was given by the referee. Much of the action in the second half has been in the Bar Flies half, with them limited to long range shots on the Devils goal.

On 53 mins, another Neil Hayes corner found its way in front of Chris Grehan who shot and scored the equaliser and to see out the game with a point earned.

Full time result, Dublin Devils FC 1-1 Bar Flies, and the loss from earlier in the season turned into a draw this time.

11 a-side Winter League Match 12 Report

Dublin Devils FC 4-3 Cherrypickers

Scorers -Hayes 28, 34, Scanlon 52, Gildea 56

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Chris Grehan, Pete Dockrell, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brendan Gildea, Neil Hayes (Francis Fitzgibbon 44), Brian Donegan (Conrad Cadogan 48),James Lee, Paul Gogarty.

An early 7.15pm match tonight in dry but very cold conditions against bottom of the table Cherrypickers who the Devils shared a 1-1 with in the first game.

Again this first 5 mins saw the Devils having to defend and not get very much going forward at all. By 10 mins when Brendan Gildea sent in a shot to the box, the Devils were playing better.

On 15 mins Devils Keeper Mark Carroll had to make a save on an open goal that would have been certain as the opener, but 6 mins later in much the same situation Cherrypickers just had to roll the ball into an open net to go 1-0 up. That was the spark the Devils needed to come to life. On 24 mins James Lee shot wide and a minute later Neil Hayes’ shot was saved.

On 26 mins Cherrypickers had the ball bounce off the inside of the upright, and after a fumbled clearance the ball went out and straight back into an open net. Devils 0-2 Cherrypickers. On 28 mins, a Brian Donegan shot was saved but the keeper dropped the ball and Neil Hayes was there to capitalise and score his first Winter League goal for the Devils and shorten their advantage.

At half time, Dublin Devils FC 1-2 Cherrypickers.

The Devils came out fighting in the second half, a Brendan Gildea corner on 34 mins found its way into the back of the net and the goal was awarded to Neil Hayes, 2-2. On 37 mins, the same move again was saved by the keeper.

Mark Carroll had to make a save on 38 mins, Brian Donegan shot wide on 39, Arnaldo Gibelli on 41 and then on 42 mins Cherrypickers scored another goal identical to their first beating the last defender and rolling into an open goal, Devils 2-3 Cherrypickers.

The Devils fought again, Chris Grehan shot wide on 45 mins, and another Gildea corner seemed to cross the line but was not given. On 51 mins Arnaldo Gibelli and Chris Grehan both had further shots saved as the Devils went all out to claw the score back level.

On 52 mins Devils Captain Niall Scanlon found the ball at his feet on the half way line, he shot into the air and the ball soared up, over and down right into the back of the net, amazing goal and now 3-3 with a few minutes left in the game. Following the goal, Mark Carroll had a string of saves to make as Cherrypickers still fought for all 3 points. Some beautiful play in keeping and controlling the ball from Francis Fitzgibbon eventually got it into the box and a goal claimed by Brendan Gildea was scored to send the Devils supporters wild on the side-line and earn the victory in a 4-3 thriller. Never count the Devils out until the final whistle blows………

11 a-side Winter League Match 13 Report

Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Jossy’s Giants

Devils Team – Mark Carroll, Niall Scanlon (c), Mike McQuillan, Chris Grehan, Pete Dockrell, Arnaldo Gibelli, Brendan Gildea,James Lee, Paul Gogarty, Keith Boyd (Ivan Stevens 19), Alan Keating (Derek Naughton 17).

Another 7.15pm kickoff for the final match of 2011, against our Matchday 4 conquerors Jossy’s Giants.

The Devils started strongly, taking the game to the Giants, Paul Gogarty ran in on goal on 3 mins only to have his shot saved. Jossy’s had a corner cleared on 4 mins and then yet another superb save this season from Devils goalkeeper Mark Carroll who stopped a certain goal from a corner and sent the rebound over on 8mins.

It was end to end action, with Jossy's Giants taking advantage of their height sending the ball long and high at every opportunity. On 11 mins, Jossy’s had a goal disallowed for fouls in the box and on 18 mins, Carroll again saved a shot that was mishandled on the line by the defence and a penalty was awarded. The penalty taker stepped up with 19 mins on the clock and sent the ball crashing against the crossbar.

The rest of the half saw Jossy’s Giants continue their onslaught on the Devils goal, but to no avail. At half time, Dublin Devils 0-0 Jossy’s Giants.

In the second half, the Devils came out fighting, Brendan Gildea place the ball on Ivan Stevens head, but he shot went wide in the first minute and then his own shot on goal from a corner was saved with 34 mins played.

The Devils were being limited to long range shots as Jossy’s Giants continued the onslaught of long and high balls. On 45 mins, Mark Carroll again made a goal stopping save but the ball found its way into the net after dropping to a Giants player who shot on the rebound. Devils 0- Giants.

The rest of the match was a frustrating effort for the Devils as they tried in vain to get the equaliser, drawing on the previous weeks never say die attitude.

Alas, it was not mean to be and after a terrific undefeated run of 7 games, the year was to end in a narrow defeat, and 5th place in the League Table.

Full Time Dublin Devils FC 0-1 Jossy’s Giants.

2012 beckons as the Devils kick off the New Year with a 7.15pm game against Watson Wanderers, as its 5th playing 8th in the league table.

The Devils made a very good attacking start with some superb passing in the first 5 mins to establish their position.

On 12 mins Ivan Stevens took a free kick on the edge of the box that forced the Wanderers keeper to make an accurate save. Almost on the rebound Mike McQuillan laid on a pass to Chris Grehan who powered toward goal and put the ball in the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign and giving the Devils a 1-0 lead in the match.

On 18 mins a goalkeeper kick out found Paul Gogarty who just sent the ball wide of the post.

On 20 mins, Watson Wanderers took advantage of a rebound off a corner and the score was levelled at 1-1. The Devils have some good waves at getting forward for the remainder of the half, without increasing the scoreline.

At Half Time, Dublin Devils 0-0 Watson Wanderers.

With 8 mins gone in the second half, Ivan Stevens got on the end of a throw in and ran the ball into the net to put the Devils back in the lead at 2-1.

The Devils challenged the Wanderers goal at every opportunity and the defence was sold as it has been all season, with some great saves as ever from the Devils goalkeeper.

The Devils tired at the end, in the first post Christmas game back in action, but as the final whistle blew, the result was all that mattered.

Final score – Dublin Devils 2-1 Watson Wanderers, a result which solidified the Devils in 5th position and closed the gap to the top of the table to 5 points. Next week sees a clash with the table toppers, but for now a first victory of the New Year was very satisfying for all present.
