Dublin Devils FC To Feature
On RTE's 'Reality Bites'
Irish gay soccer team the Dublin Devils FC will feature on The Underdogs, a new one-off ‘Reality Bites’ documentary on RTÉ Two television presented by Paddy McKenna, that seeks out new, unsung, inspirational Irish sporting heroes.
Paddy McKenna meets soccer players Ronan Herlihy and Francis Fitzgibbon, both hailing from rural communities, they came out and found meaning and community through their involvement with the Dublin Devils.
Ronan Herlihy joined the Devils in 2012 after returning home from Australia, he said, "Since I was a young fella, my family has been steeped in soccer. When I came back to Tipp from Australia, I heard about this gay team in Dubin. I got in touch with them in Facebook and the next week I was driving up to train with them. It’s a great way to integrate in to society in Dublin. See, I’d come out just before I went to Australia and then I hit the road! If I look back now, I should’ve done it years ago.”
Commenting on other teams’ reactions to playing the Dublin Devils, Francis Fitzgibbon (pictured) told Reality Bites, “Curiousity is the first thing. When we’re over on the pitch warming up, you can see them standing looking over at us and chatting amongst themselves about what they expected to turn up – like eleven drag queens mincing around the pitch! For them it’s an added encouragement to beat us. We’d have a joke afterwards amongst ourselves ‘oh, they just got beaten by the queers!’”
Along with the Dublin Devils, The Underdogs also profiles the Irish Wheelchair Rugby Team and the Irish Homeless Football team.
Tune into RTE 2, Wednesday, November 20 at 9.55pm.
